Indrajal Comics Collection (1962-1990) : ndrajal Comics began publishing self-titled monthly issues in March 1964. Each of the first 10 issues had 16 pages of Phantom comics. The stories had to be edited to fit this short format. The remaining 12 pages were dedicated to other content. similar to Golc Key's style. In the next 19 issues it became 20- 24 pages. As the series continued, different characters would share the spotlight Characters such as Flash Gordon. Mandrake the Magician, Bahadur, Kerry Drake, Rip Kirby, Garth, Mike Nomad and Buz Sawyer appeared - as well as Disnev characters Robin Hood anc Mickey Mouse along with Goofy, but the majority of the series spotlighted The Phantom. So much so that the series is ofter erroneously referred to as "The Phantom" instead of the correct "Indrajal Comics"

Indrajal Comics holds a massive place in Indian pop culture history. Launched in March 1964 by Bennett, Coleman & Co. (the publishers of The Times of India), it was the series that truly introduced international comic icons to generations of Indian readers.
Before folding in April 1990, the publication ran for a massive 803 issues.
The Star Lineup
While the series featured many heroes, The Phantom (popularly known as Vetaal in the Hindi editions) was its undisputed crown jewel. More than half of the entire 803-issue run featured his jungle adventures.
Over the years, Indrajal alternated its lineup to feature other legendary characters syndicated from King Features:
* International Heroes: Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, Rip Kirby, Buz Sawyer, and Kerry Drake.
* Homegrown Representation: In December 1976, Indrajal introduced Bahadur, an immensely popular Indian comic hero created by Aabid Surti.
Unique Quirks & Localization
Because these western comics were being packaged for Indian readers in the '60s and '70s, the editors made some famous, highly creative adjustments to avoid local confusion:
* Denkali: In Lee Falk’s original scripts, The Phantom lived in the fictional African country of Bengalla. To ensure Indian readers didn't confuse it with the Indian state of Bengal, Indrajal changed the setting's name to Denkali (or Dangalla).
* The Costume: Globally, The Phantom wears a purple suit. However, because of printing limitations and color choices in the earliest issues, Indrajal originally printed his suit in blue before switching to the traditional purple by issue #11.
* Heavy Censorship: Romantic scenes were heavily trimmed. Even completely innocent kisses between The Phantom and his girlfriend/wife Diana Palmer were regularly edited out to match the conservative cultural standards of the time.
A Multilingual Phenomenon
Though it started as a monthly magazine in English and Hindi, its massive popularity forced it to go fortnightly and eventually weekly. At its peak, Indrajal was translated and printed in nearly a dozen languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Kannada—making it a genuinely pan-Indian childhood staple.
Today, original Indrajal issues are prized collector's items, evoking intense nostalgia for the golden era of Indian comic books.
इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स (Indrajal Comics) भारतीय पॉप कल्चर के इतिहास का एक बहुत बड़ा और बेहद खास हिस्सा है। इसे मार्च 1964 में बेनेट, कोलमैन एंड कंपनी (द टाइम्स ऑफ इंडिया के प्रकाशक) द्वारा शुरू किया गया था। यह वही सीरीज थी जिसने भारतीय पाठकों को अंतरराष्ट्रीय कॉमिक्स के सुपरहीरोज से मिलवाया।

सबसे बड़े हीरोज
वैसे तो इस सीरीज में कई हीरो थे, लेकिन द फैंटम (The Phantom)—जिन्हें हिंदी में हम सब वेताल के नाम से जानते हैं—इस कॉमिक्स के सबसे बड़े सितारे थे। पूरी सीरीज के आधे से ज्यादा अंक अकेले वेताल की कहानियों पर ही आधारित थे।
वक्त के साथ इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स ने किंग फीचर्स (King Features) के कई और मशहूर किरदारों को भी शामिल किया:
* अंतरराष्ट्रीय हीरोज: मैंड्रेक द मैजिशियन (Mandrake the Magician), फ्लैश गॉर्डन (Flash Gordon), रिप किर्बी और कैरी ड्रेक।
* भारतीय हीरो: दिसंबर 1976 में इंद्रजाल ने अपना पहला स्वदेशी भारतीय सुपरहीरो बहादुर (Bahadur) पेश किया, जिसे आबिद सुरती ने बनाया था। यह किरदार भारत में बेहद लोकप्रिय हुआ।
कुछ दिलचस्प बातें और बदलाव
चूंकि ये विदेशी कॉमिक्स 60 और 70 के दशक में भारतीय पाठकों के लिए तैयार की जा रही थीं, इसलिए इसके संपादकों ने भारतीय संस्कृति के हिसाब से कुछ बड़े ही अनोखे बदलाव किए थे:
* डेंकाली (Denkali): ऑरिजनल इंग्लिश कॉमिक्स में वेताल 'बेंगाला' (Bengalla) नाम के एक काल्पनिक देश में रहता था। लेकिन भारतीय पाठक इसे भारत के राज्य 'बंगाल' से न जोड़ लें, इसलिए इंद्रजाल ने इसका नाम बदलकर डेंकाली कर दिया।
* सूट का रंग: दुनिया भर में वेताल का सूट बैंगनी (purple) रंग का होता है। लेकिन शुरुआत में प्रिंटिंग की दिक्कतों और कलर चॉइस की वजह से भारत में इसे नीले (blue) रंग का छापा गया। बाद में 11वें अंक से इसे वापस बैंगनी किया गया।
* सेंसरशिप: उस दौर की सामाजिक सोच को देखते हुए कॉमिक्स में काफी कांट-छांट की जाती थी। वेताल और उसकी मंगेतर/पत्नी डायना पामर (Diana Palmer) के बीच के रोमांटिक सीन्स या किसिंग सीन्स को कॉमिक्स से पूरी तरह हटा दिया जाता था।
कई भाषाओं में लोकप्रियता
शुरुआत में यह कॉमिक्स सिर्फ अंग्रेजी और हिंदी में हर महीने (Monthly) आती थी। लेकिन इसकी भारी डिमांड को देखते हुए इसे 15 दिन (Fortnightly) और फिर बाद में साप्ताहिक (Weekly) कर दिया गया। अपने सुनहरे दौर में इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स बंगाली, मराठी, तमिल, मलयालम, गुजराती और कन्नड़ जैसी करीब 12 भारतीय भाषाओं में छपती थी।
आज के समय में, पुरानी इंद्रजाल कॉमिक्स के ओरिजिनल प्रिंट्स मिलना बहुत मुश्किल है और ये कॉमिक्स लवर्स के लिए बेहद कीमती कलेक्शन बन चुके हैं।
